This is just around our area in Spring Grove, both roads either side of us and the road behind us were all closed, and without a snorkel on our 4wd we were definately not keen on going through.

Garry Grant and his Father Keith who had travelled from Nelson the day before picked Melvin my friend from Scotland and I up at Auckland airport on Sunday afternoon 23rd Oct, with the Alltrax service van and the Escort on the trailer behind. We travelled to a friend of mine in Papakura, where we over nighted. But not before we headed down to Murphys Irish bar in Drury to watch the All Blacks win the nail biting WC rugby final. The next afternoon we dropped off our Transport trailer at Carr Haslem yard for storage and transporting south. Escort and Van then proceeded to the Viaduct Basin Wharf in Auckland for weigh in, documentation and drivers briefing for Targa. The same place that was the official rugby fan zone the evening before. We met up with my Co Driver Neil Andrews from Waihi and other competitors we knew from last year. The cars were left at the Viaduct Basin Parc Ferme over night. We over nighted in Parnell about 10 min drive away. I slept fitfully that night excited and nervous about the 5 days and 37 special stages of tarmac rallying that lay ahead.
Day 1 Tuesday 25th Oct:
We left Auckland and headed towards Whangarei. On special stage 1 we started off with the camera car following us, it was a tight stage and very strange being followed so closely. The Escort unable to shake off the Subaru Legacy camera car, no surprises there. The weather was great and with the dry roads we kept increasing the pace, keeping the car on the road. Unfortunately stage 8 the last stage of the day was cancelled when a late model Evo Targa Touring car, huband and wife team went off the road and into a tree. They were taken to hospital, but thankfully no serious injuries were sustained. We were happy to get through the day in one piece, with car performing exceptionally well with the new engine and axle. The results at end of day one we found ourselves surprisingly running 7th overall in the Metalman Classic and 2nd in our class. We put it down to the roads being new to all the regular Targa competitors, eliminating that favourable edge they had. The extra horse power of the new engine and a bit of practicing I had been doing at Ruapuna.
Day 2 Wed 26th Oct
Day 2 dawned sunny and fine. And we were back into action again and by lunch time we were running 5th overall and 1st in class and retained that position all day. There were only 6 stages on day 2, we completed the final stage 14 and were touring, heading toward Springhill farm for the afternoons extravanza, the car having run faultlessly when ut of the blue our car broke down due a broken alternator wire. Quite a few competitors stopped to see what was our problem, which was very kind of them. Brice Briggs who supports and leases the RS1800 Escort to Vincent Bristow from England, towed us into Springhill farm service. Springhill farm is a 1000 acre farm owned by one of the sponsors for this years Targa. The farm has its own tarseal airstrip. The afternoon entertainment consisted of side by side drags of competitors cars, service vans and the touring cars. Not to Mention Steve Millen in his Nissan GT-R35 drag racing against Leigh Hopper in his Helicopter, (Leigh Hopper piloting the helicopter like he was born in it) check it out on U-Tube. Plus clay Pigeon shooting, a live band and hot food, not mention other aeroplanes doing acrobatics. It was a real petrol heads and boys toys afternoon. Once the afternoons entertainment was over we headed off towards Auckland around 7pm to Parc Ferme at Metal Mans Yard in Takanini.
Day 3 Thursday 27th Oct
Dawned wet and the first stage of the day, stage 15 in the Waikato was stage 1 last year. I attempted to drive as hard as I thought to be safe, this being my 3rd Targa event, but my first time to encounter rain of any significance. By the end of the day 3 we had dropped back to 7th overall in the Metalman classic, but still maintaining 1st in class. We serviced and over nighted in Taupo. Thanks to my Co driver Neil and my Service Crew Garry, Keith and Melvin, we were going well. But we still had 2 more arduous days to go.
Day 4 Friday 28th Oct
It seemed even wetter the 2nd stage of the day on stage 24 I tried to take a 90 degree corner too soon an ended up sliding around at a right angle to the road with the front wheels well into the grass. Managed to reverse the car back around and continued our progress. On stage 28 I came around a tight corner accelerated a little too hard and next thing the back of the car came around and we were heading off the road backwards. Just when I thought we were off into the scrub, there was a slight bang and suddenly I found the car facing the right direction so off we went. Looking back over the in car footage, the bang I heard in the spin turned out to be the tight corner sign post that the middle of our back bumper came into contact with. How lucky was that, it hardly marked the bumper. End of the day service in Palmerston North was a very wet experience for the guys. Our position at the end of Day 4, was still 7th overall and 1st in class. I thought for sure we would have dropped back further.
Day 5 Sat 29th Oct.
The weather was fine and at the start of the day I had a 1 minute lead over my next rival in my class the the 500 BHP V8 powered Chrysler Valiant Charger. I backed off the pace thinking by just trying driving steady I could maintain my position. A fatal mistake, the stages were fast and flowing and by lunch break we were 1 min behind the Charger. I went harder in the afternoon but I was unable make any head way over the charger who just pulled away from me further along with some of my other rivals I had been previously beating. At the end of the day 5 and the end of the rally we had slipped back to 10th Overall in the Metalman Classic and 2nd overall in Class. We headed off to Havelock North town centre to be greeted by a large contingent of locals and to drive over the finish line and receive our finishers medals. My 3rd finishers medal in 3 Targa’s.
The next morning Sun 30th Oct we attended the prize giving breakfast at the Hastings Town Hall. Before picking up our car trailer that had been transported down to Napier from Auckland. Loaded the trusty old Escort on and headed off to Wellington to catch the ferry.
A big thanks to my Co driver Neil, my service crew Melvin , Keith and Garry.
Also a big thanks to Garry Grant of Alltrax Race and Rally for the preparation of my Targa Escort and keeping the car running smoothely through out the rally. Also a thanks to Bruce Farley who spectated for most of the rally, giving me feed back on what he saw, gave me encouragement and dined with us on several evenings.
The Targa is no doubt one of the most exciting motorsport events in New Zealand. Each one I have entered I have learnt more each time. I am proud to show the North Islanders that we South Islanders are capable of competing against them and beating them.
In closing my final word is to say, always go hard all the way to the end.
Targa Bambina next year coming up on the 16th March 2012, watch this space.

This Morrie has been in one family all its life and is having extensive rust repair carried out so the next generation can also enjoy driving it.

We all know how busy and crazy it gets this time of year, so my big sis, my friend and I had a girls weekend away and took the water taxi from Kaiteri to Tonga Bay (Abel Tasman) and did around 16k of the track. Tonga through to Anchorage. We walked this comfortably in 4 hours including a lunch stop and walk up to Cleopatra Pools- gorgeous there! Its fabulous to make the time to spend with friends and family and to include a bit of exercise just topped it off! Here are some pictures on the trail, I would totally recommend this to anyone, the last time I did this walk was when I was at school won't say how many years ago that was!!!! fitness not essential but helps, there are a few hills to get up....

This is Rhys, he is 5 yrs old, doesnt think much of school in fact he told me the other day he loves the weekends cause he hates school! But he draws some pretty cool race cars and trucks in his draft writing book for a 5yr old.

A couple of weeks ago he went for a ride in a friends 4WD and you couldnt wipe the smile off his face, it took a few days to get him off the topic. Here is the truck he went in....

Gala, FunDay, Wacky Hair , Painting & boxing

ALLTRAX got involved in this years Wakefield School Twilight Gala with a silent auction to win a ride in the MK2 Escort and a balloon guess in the mini cooper. It seemed to create a bit of interest especially when we arrived with the cars as the Gala started....... driving in the main gates and parking on the court. Some very excited children soon gathered around. Many adults showed interest in the Mini Coopers appearance wanting to learn more about Projectsixtyfour and what it is about.

Nelson 4x4 Club had a Fun Day outing out Motueka way, even though we didn't have our jeep to compete in it didn't stop us from going. The kids are always going on and on about off roading so when Guy asked us if we wanted to go for a look we packed a picnic lunch and headed over and met up with the club. The kids counted about 26 trucks in total! What a terrific turn out, just like rally hill climbs used to be not so long ago!!! Quite a few challenges were enjoyed for those competing and watching.

Last week we had a Wacky Hair Day at school to raise money for a new St John Ambo, this is the first time I've had to do 3 coloured wacky hair do's before school, but they all enjoyed it even me pulling and twisting at their hair. The boys hair was "tame" compared to some of the kids at school, xmas baubles, tinsel, marshmallows, wire, wigs, branches.......just use your imagination.

Noel our lovely retired (lol) builder/painter has been back this month to complete painting the exterior of our house (that we started back in April I think) hes done everything except the back wall as we are going to re clad this with some alterations. It is such a great feeling to have a clean, weather proof house especially when I didn't have to get out MY paint brush! Actually next week I have to cause theres still blue tape on some windows that I have to paint. Inside. Sigh.

Also around the yard we have begun our small block of sheds (for the house, NOT cars) which will also accommodate a workshop toilet. My brother is doing this for us, slow progress but in the spare time....when ever that is.

cakes, birthdays, beach and snow

On the family side of things August keep us quite busy. Finally getting all the kids through flu's etc (which consumed the July hols) Then 2 weeks into term Jake came down with the latest virus doing the rounds so had him off school for 9days total and even then he wasnt 100% but they are all back at school and are well...touch wood. August brings us many family and close friends birthdays, we had a family dinner for Pop (Garrys dad) and a chocolate cake for desert with those candles that keep relighting which was a hit with the kids but note: it fills your house with smoke. lol. Nana's (Garry's mum) birthday was celebrated with a shared morning tea at the ever popular Lions playground at Tahunanui beach. This was such a great choice as the kids loved it and the main playground had been completely refitted out with new equipment. We made Nana this butterfly cake. A bit rush rush to get it iced in time and not quite what I had intended it to look like but still tasted good.

The kids had been nagging at us to take them to the snow and it was looking like a good weekend ahead so we thought its now or never. What a fantastic day, the sun was shining, no wind, hot, fun and busy! We just mucked about sliding down the hill and making this cool as snow man. Which the kids "helped" make but most of all looked forward to demolishing!!! Poor Ed!

When Jacob turned 5yrs Garry's parents took him on the plane to Wellington, so when the twins turned 5yrs they did the same. They went at the beginning of this term, so the children in their class were just buzzing when they got back to school on Thursday wanting to hear all about it. The boys had a great time with Nana & Pop,they visited Te Papa, Wellington Zoo, rode the cable car but enjoyed the earth quake room at Te Papa best of all. Wow what an exhausting couple of days for Nana & Pop though. Thankyou so much for taking them.

Its Snowing!

I had a girls weekend at Lake Rotoiti, we knew there was a cold front due to come through on Sunday, but thought we'd have plenty of time to pack and leave. At 2pm the sleet & hail started then snow flakes began to fall, Vicki assured us we still had plenty of time as the snow was still melting on the concrete, it was settling in the trees by 3pm, we kept popping outside to get progressive photos and was surprised how quickly it grew in depth on the cars and the ground. By 3:30 we were packing up and skies were a clear blue by the time we left. Just down the road a bit and the sky turned a stormy grey and we knew we had just got out in time. Think if it had been Saturday night we would have been snowed in for a couple of days! It just made the weekend all that more exciting....thanks Vicki & Rachel an awesome time yet again.

Got no oil pressure??

This is what Garry found when they dropped the sump off !!! We have owned the Disco for well over a year and have had it out 4x4 driving many times but obviously never enough to dislodge this old rag buried in the sump oil. Garry had just fitted the truck with new wheel bearings and was giving it a test drive and brake test when the oil pressure light came on. The searching for the problem eventually lead to this disgusting mess which had happily shreadded and wound itself around the crankshaft and cam shaft and small and large particles were found in the oil. So beware when you buy a vehicle that the owner or mechanic hasnt left there underwear in the sump!!! NOTE: We purchased the Landy along with the rag just in case you were wondering.

SILVER FERN RALLY MOVES NORTH FOR 2012
After three successful rallies in the South Island, the NZ Silver Fern Rally organisers have made the decision to move their week long marathon event to the North Island for 2012. It will also be the first time that two wheel drive cars only, will be eligible to compete.
"With the event held bi-annually and growing in local as well as international popularity, we surveyed the events past competitors, and they responded with the majority sending us a strong message indicating a need for a fresh look, and to make this a truly New Zealand event" said rally chairman, Hamilton’s Gary Smith.
"Yes the North Island will bring a whole load of new challenges, but nothing our small but dedicated organising team feel can’t be overcome. We started from nothing in 2006 down south, and have built up a great team of can-do people who want the event to succeed" Smith said.
Organisers will now begin the process of planning the rally route and overnight stops. This will entail meeting with, and working closely with, Car Clubs, Local Councils, land owners and community groups.
"We can’t emphasise enough that without the support of all these people an event of this size could never happen. However our preliminary discussions suggest a positive attitude with everyone working together to make another successful event" Smith added.
Previous rally manager, Timaru’s Carl Rabbidge commented, "I have every confidence that our South Island based event management team members will enjoy the challenge that the North Island environment will bring".
Rabbidge added "the whole team have done a fantastic job in establishing the NZ Silver Fern Rally as the world’s premier marathon car rally and the intention is to return south in 2014, and then maybe alternate islands if this idea works."
The 2012 NZ Silver Fern Rally has been calendared by MotorSport New Zealand, for the week of November 10th – 18th 2012.

Turning 40

I read somewhere that forty is the old age of youth and fifty is the youth of old age. So I guess that puts me somewhere in the middle. mid life crisis here I come! The great thing about reaching another decade is that you get tremendously spoilt! No big surprises which was good just lots of time with friends and family and loved ones. I am truly thankful to be here to enjoy this time it makes me appreciate what I have.
On my big day I had 2 sick kids home from school, my lovely mum looked after them and my girlfriend took me to town for the day. Just devine....no deadlines just a day out with my best friend. We shopped had lunch shopped some more and then we had an hour long full body massage. WOW I do recommed this if you have never had one it was just luxurious. Afterwards we retired to the relaxing lounge to enjoy a glass of champers and brownie and chatted until 6pm (when they closed) then it was home to our families.
A couple of days later I met 2 girlfriends for lunch, they had both gave me hand made gifts which reflect their personalities perfectly....thanks girls, luv ya.
Last weekend my lovely husband arranged childcare for the whole weekend and we went on a 48hr retreat. Treated ourselves to rest, sleep, a good book, good food and walks on the beach. It was so relaxing.
So I'm back with my feet on the ground but have still got a really good sounding voucher to use from my big sis and best friend. Its to walk part of the Able Tasman Track, one night included. On my wish list I had: to walk the Heaphy Track (4 - 5 days tramp) which hopefully one day I will get to do. But I cant wait to head off to the able tasman, with those two I know we will have a blast! Thanks everybody for making my day really special, I love you all very much. xxx

Solo Retreat

Sometimes you just need some time alone.....I was proud of my man taking off on a solo road trip, just to get away and have some time out. A very good friend offered his West Coast Bach to him for a night and he packed the essentials into a backpack strapped it to his motorbike and off he went. Better Late than never

April School Holidays were pretty much consumed with the twins 5th birthday....see previous postings. But we did manage to get some other stuff done like: Baking Hot Cross Buns, WOW they are so yummmmmmy when they are fresh and hot from the oven, and as this was my first ever attempt I was pretty pleased with how they turned out. Its quite a long procedure (approx 2 hrs) but now I can say I've done that!

Garry, his dad and my dad together made this awesome tree hut for the kids. Its been on "my" to do list for ages and the time was right to get it under way. Garry had to first tackle the tree as it was way to big for our garden and was shading the natives below. So most of that came down leaving the 3 large limbs as the platform for the hut. It took a full day to assemble and attach the hut in place and all we need now is a big slide so its easier for the kids to exit.

We have always wanted to try out the Hackett track (up the Aniseed Valley) and thought that the kids were probably old enough to do part of it. We hadn't been there ourselves so wern't too sure on its suitability for the little kids. Anyway we headed off (note the signpost) don't you find thats its always exciting and easier getting to an unknown destination than it is to turn around once you get there and walk ALL THE WAY BACK. Don't get me wrong we loved it but it was probably a bit much to expect from a 5yr old x 2. We got there and back though and the Wispering Falls were definately worth the winging, protests and the "can you lift me ups"!!

Jensen Interceptor

This Jensen is here for us to complete a major body and chassis rebuild. By the time it is finished Gavin will have replaced most of the floors and substructures as well as all external panels except for the roof which will also require rust repair in the front corners. We will be taking this project through to top coat preparation.

Kindergarten Visits ALLTRAX

The boys got an awesome send off from Kindergarden with a trip to a Welsh Pony farm then they all came here to tour the workshop and see some race cars. As there were 40 kids and 15+ adults we divided into groups and Garry did a demo on changing a tyre, Gavin shaped some panel steel and I gave them turns sitting in a raceseat and 5point seatbelt and they got to look underneith a car. Its just amazing watching their reactions as they see things for the first time. Garry then took one of the kindy teachers for a skid in the Escort around our paddock while we all looked on. It was a fantastic morning. I made over 40 car cookies iced detail and pebbles for wheels and they each got a nut and bolt. Such little things but the feedback has been incredible.

Off To School

Our boys are 5 and off to school. Hard to believe we have reached this milestone and all in one piece! Kayne and Rhys have grown so much in the last 6 months, showing more confidience and learning their names and some numbers and words. Yes they were ready and excited. They have a lovely class with 16 children in total. This week they asked to come home on the school bus which they did and loved it.

Jacob Turns 9

Based on the Star Wars Theme. Invitations were sent asking for the Jedi's to meet at the Grant Galaxy. Featuring Jakes favourite character "General Grevious" a mean looking creature with 4 robotic arms and 4 sabers. We had fun and games including saber duels, eating hanging donuts with hands tied behind backs, ten pin bowling and mini golf.

The cake was based on the volcano scene from Episode 3.
Yoda soda drinks. (lime icecream sodas) We all had heaps of fun and Kayne (4yrs) even got a STRIKE at bowling.

TWO HISTORIC CARS IN TOP SIX OVERALL AT RALLY NZ
South Canterbury driver Hayden Paddon (Subaru) has won the 2011 Rally New Zealand
event, which was run over the past weekend on the gravel back roads of the southern
Franklin and Raglan areas, but in a surprise to many, two 35 year old Historic Rally cars
have finished in the top six placings overall.
Taking fifth spot overall, and first two wheel drive car home, were Kaiapoi’s Brian Stokes
and Ally Mackay in a 1978 Ford Escort RS1800, with fellow Cantabrian’s Marcus Van Klink

Coming into the final 4.6km special stage around the Hampton Downs race track, the
pairings were matching each others times, but it was “Klinky” who admitted to having a
few nervous moments along the way. “Today we were trying real hard to catch Brian
(Stokes) and there were a couple of times when we were just a little over the limit, and I
had to back off the pace bit after “woops” was clearly communicated inside the car.”
Stokes and Van Klink also took out the top two placing’s in the Rally NZ Historic section,
and were followed by former Rally NZ Directors, both who have returned to Historic
rallying in recent years, Rob Wylie (Auckland) in a Nissan 240RS and Hamilton’s Gary Smith
in a Ford Escort RS1800.
Smith’s event was slowed in the early stages with a gear selector issue, which necessitated
two gearbox changes on the Saturday, while Wylie had his issues today (Sunday) hitting a
rock, damaging the rear of the car and breaking a wheel rim. In fact Wylie said “we actually
hit the same rock both times through Whaanga Coast (the stage was run on two occasions)
but we did it at the right place as the TV crew phoned later to say they have our bumper!”.

I've watched the images coming out of Christchurch and am shocked like everyone else that this could happen here, in New Zealand. Out beautiful garden city has been reduced to rubble. Stunned, shocked, distraught...... only words and none of them adequately describe the impact this has had on us all.

The People voted and the trophy went to Gavin and Johnnys 1934 Chev Tudor Junior "RAT A TAT TAT" It was undoubtably the show stopper, often our tent was deep in people waiting to get a closer look, and some lucky ones even got to sit in it..... and even some luckier ones (me) got to have a ride. Gavin has built this up in only 9 months, a few things yet to do before its fully finished and certified to be on the road. Look for it around, it will be on the road very soon.

Hi Everyone, well Nelson put on some spectacular weather for us over the weekend. Although we got sunburn on top of sunburn we enjoyed 2 busy days at the 2011 Nelson Car Show at Cadillac Way. This was the first time in the 13yrs we have been operating that we have taken part at such an event. We would like to thank all those that showed their interest, stopped to discuss their project, made enquiries, and left their details to book in work. We had such a huge response, a clear indication that it was worth putting in the time and effort to be there. The huge and varied range of vehicles on display was tribute to such a well organised and run event. Thanks again to all those that stopped by our display, you kept us very busy!

We are pleased to Welcome Gavin Martin to our team. Gavin joined us during one of our busiest times of 2010, The Silver Fern Marathon Rally AND Dunlop Targa NZ in Oct/Nov. His first week spent in the workshop was alone while Garry and Matthew were away managing and servicing our MK2 Escort at the Silver Fern Rally. Gavin clearly not requiring any supervision, got stuck into his first job, removing the rusty floor then fabricating and fitting new floor pans to a cadillac convertable. Hi again, Its wonderful to have our men back home after a 10 day "working trip" from Chch to Queenstown in the sprint to the finish of the Silver Fern Rally 2010. Thought I'd share a few pictures that were taken on our camera during the event. This probably wont interest all the guys out there, but for the girls thought I would share how I treated myself with a day off from the kids last Saturday while Garry was still away at the Silver Fern Rally.

This is what I created.

Its an advent Calender for December in the lead up to Xmas. Its got 24 little drawers for the kids to open for their treat.

It was wonderful to spend the day in adult company and having a very busy, industrious, creative day building, glueing, spray painting, and hammering!

I was wrapped with the final result, which hopefully will last for years to come, and may even become an heirloom.....

DAY 5 Silver Fern Rally

Today's six stages take the field through a total of 173 kms in South Otago and the Catlins in Eastern Southland to the overnight halt at Invercargill.

After sitting in 6th place in the Historic Challenge at end of day 4, the rigours of day 5 took their toll the ALLTRAX car and broke some steering bolts, luckily they slid off to the side of the road and our crew went in to retrieve, this resulted in a maximum time given for SS27 and again for SS28 while they repaired the car. Rejoined again for the last 2 stages of the day, to begin closing the gap. With only 2 days left, they now have a big job ahead to claw their way back up the field.

Tomorrow's competition includes six stages in Central Southland and Central Otago totalling 182 kms before the overnight halt in Alexandra.

This was the first ever rally for myself and my co driver Neil Andrews from Waihi in the Corremandel. Without a doubt it is one of the most awesome events I have ever been in. It is well organised and professionally run. Neil did an outstanding job as a co driver. My Escort was built and immaculately prepared by Garry Grant and the team at ALLTRAX. The car drawing a lot of interest from day one. It was the only MK1 Escort entered in this years Targa. The car handled exceptionally well and is a credit to Garry.
During the 6 day event I met a lot of new people and made many new friends. Prologue at Hampton Downs race track was a disappointment when the spark plug lead came off right on the start line as we launched. Once the lead was secured the car ran very well on the second SS around Hampton downs. Being an endurance rally I took it easy on the day one especially the first stage that was very foggy. From there I gained some confidence and started to work my way up the field some what. A big thanks to Garry and his father Keith whom tirelessly serviced for us throughout the rally keeping the car going. It was a pleasure to be able to make it from the start in Manakau city to the finish in Wellington in one piece. Although we had our challenges along the way, being the only car in the whole rally to suffer a broken windscreen and not just once. It happened 2 days in a row! Disappointment came on the last day when the clutch cable broke on the Upper Hutt SS28 and the car had to be driven out of the stage in 3rd gear. We drove to an unscheduled service where Garry and Keith installed another clutch cable very quickly and got us up and running again.
No class prizes to be had, but I was pleased to be awarded a medal for being a Targa finisher.

With Targa NZ over for 2010 we now concentrate on finishing touches in preparation for the South Island Silver Fern Rally.

This Rally we have leased our MK 11 Escort again to UK driver Jacob Scannell with NZ Chris Lancaster as co driver.

Garry has prepared the car to the very highest of standards, this year Jacob will be dealing with a much faster car as its now running a 2L Pinto engine.

He drove the same car in the 2008 Silver Fern but as a 1600.

We are hoping with the extra power it will help get him out of trouble and bring it home in a "straighter condition" than last time.

With Targa NZ and Waimate 50 over for 2010 its now full steam ahead in preparation for the EPAY SILVER FERN RALLY.

With 3 big events in the space of 4 weeks its been a frenzy of activity here at ALLTRAX.

Peter, Neil, Garry & Keith returned from Targa last week, they said the event was terrific, well organised and generally glad to be in amongst it for the week. Peter completed the event without missing a single stage!

The car not only survived but the only evidence of competing in such an event was stone chips and remains of the SECOND broken windscreen lying throughout the floor of the car.

We had a few windy days over the holidays which was perfect for kite flying, Rhys nearly got lifted off his feet a couple of times but he thought it was awesome.

A weekend at Pohara with perfect weather, we spent lots of time bike riding which really boosted the kids confidence. We decided that Jake really needed a new bike (as Rhys is riding his old one) it turned out to be the best decision as he really loves it and all he wanted to do for the weekend was ride it. Kayne hasnt shown any interest in learning to ride a bike so we borrowed a trail gaitor and strapped it onto the back of my bike and towed him. It took a wee bit of encouraging but he got the hang of it pretty quick. Rhys was right in his element and we just couldnt hold him back, Jake and Rhys were off racing each other along the track. My sister came for the weekend with us and we all had such a great break away. Just what we all needed.

Time has flown by and we've been so busy with work and new additions on the farm that I just havnt had a chance to put it all on the blog.

Here are some pics of our new arrivals this spring.

Firstly we got our "class of eight" (chooks that is!)

Anconas, whynedots, barnefelders, sussex, leghorns........

They are all heritage breeds, from a local breeder here in Nelson.

Yes they all have names, thats the fun of them all being different colours.

Jacobs = Princess Laya, Rhys'= Maisy, Kaynes=Jessie, Mine=Buffy, Garry's= Slash, Issacs=Poppy, Nana=Gwinney, Grandad=Billy.

The kids are still fighting over who gets the eggs each day, and its almost 2 months since we got them! Its neat that the novelty hasnt worn off yet.

Its nice to finally have chooks scratching about, its been on the to do list for ages. Farm Fresh EGGS are fabulous, and we never run out.

Our second additions are these 2 cuties....

Jacob and Nana named them "bunty" and "Tipet"

They are the cutest things. They are now drinking straight out of a bucket, twice a day which Jake helps with. 8am and 6pm. Hes totally into it!

On Display

This was a great opportunity to showcase a 1974 MK1 Escort RS 2000 Replica.

We had this car on display at the entrance to the super special stage at the Richmond Showgrounds.

Many of the rally spectators got to see it up close and took the opportunity to talk with us about our work, from rust repairs, building a rollcage to building up a performance car.

It was great to meet all those that stopped to chat and tell me about their cars.

Thanks to all those that stopped for a look, we had an awesome response and many genuine enquiries.

To Hot To Handle

Even though Ashton didn't run all the stages he seemed pretty stoked with what he did get to do. His rally was interupted by brake pad failure and Ashton attempting to hot up his electric power steering with a second electric motor!

A few hassles came their way but Sunday they got in 4 stages running 18th - 19th overall.

We also would like to thank the Nelson Rally organisers for organising, building and running the super special stage at the showgrounds, this was a fantastic idea with some finetuning this will be as asset to our rally.

Rally Woes

When things go right its worth every penny but when things go wrong it really sucks!

Garry opted to service again this year leaving his own rally car in the shed to get down and dirty in the service parks. Well we would have liked the opportunity to get dirty but with an early retirement for the RX7 it wasnt to be.

A service after stage one, and a phone call after stage 2, we are out, they said, there was loud bang and immediately switched her off.

We packed everything up and trundled off up the road to the end of 2 and here was the RX7 and Ashtons BDA both parked up on the side of the road.

It turns out to be the oil filter. They worked here on site for about an hour, changing filters, by passing it, etc etc but it kept exploding.

Back at the workshop they pulled it apart, turns out the internals of the oil filter parted company and ended up stuck inside one of the oil galleries inside the engine. Resulting in about 200psi oil pressure!!!

The engine was scheduled for a rebuild, it will be fully stripped and back in the car for the Tunnicliffe sprint Sep 26.

Preschool Ends Kindy Begins

Last Week was such a rush. On the family front the twins had their last day at Preschool on Tuesday and their first day at Kindergarten on Wednesday. Also after their 1st day at kindy they went to a new carer. She picks them up from Kindy 3 days a week and has them for 2 hours each of these days. This allows me to work from 9am till 2pm on these days.

So its been a huge week for us in changing schools and meeting lots of new children, adults and getting used to new surroundings, its quite a lot to take in for a 4yr old. They both did extremely well and are enjoying kindy. Sigh.... a big relief.

Work was a rush also, with deadlines leading up to the rally and arranging advertising, rushing around getting things finished and flyers to collect etc.

Everything came together and big thanks to Adrienne for our flyers, Mark "The signman" for an awesome display board and for getting all the drivers cars decals done in time for the rally.

In The Workshop

This weekend 21 22 August is the Rally of Nelson, hosted and promoted by the Nelson Car Club Inc. Fri 20th Aug: 6:30pm - 8pm Car Show at Wow carpark.
Spectator Area on Saturday is top of spooners range hill, turn right into "the lookout" the spectator area is a short distance up this road. 1st car due approx 9:10am.
See it all at Richmond Park Showgrounds: Sunday. 10am to 2pm for the super special stage and service park. Alltrax service crew will be there servicing for Chris Barnett in his RX7 (Class F) 2WD Classics.

Starting Line

This was our twins last weekend. They got a whole lot of their favourite cars, trucks and monster trucks together, lined them up and then went on the search for a starting line. They found the yoyo, perfect, so they unwound it and layed it across in front of the cars. They played this game together for ages and made all the coolest engine noises and crashing noises. The imagination was amazing. Looks like they will follow their dads passion for cars.

INVESTED

The other week Jacob was invested into cubs. Apparantely thats what its called. He had to go for 3 sessions before he was aloud to "officially" join. He really loves being part of this group of kids and its the thing he looks forward to the most each week, so thats really cool. Hes got his first lot of badges which I need to sew onto his shirt, that will make him feel like the real thing! I'm so happy hes enjoying it so much as hes not really got into team sports and its been a challenge sometimes to think of things he can join or do that isnt sport. Our moto for him this year has been ~give things a go before saying no~ I think hes beginning to understand that trying new things can be a good thing.

Heres our wee boys at the sink doing the dishes! I just couldnt resist taking this picture. They were so into doing the dishes and they didnt do to bad-a job either. Sharing the stool caused a few arguements however but eventually they sorted it out.

Trailer Casuality!

It always pays to check your load. Especially if its a rally car! A customer had an unfortunate experience when he arrived home to find his car had been driving itself into the trailer stoneguard, unbeknown to him of course. This caused some significant damage to the front end and with only days before the Nelson Rally. ALLTRAX have fixed it up and its now off to the painters. Look for it at the Rally, its the one with "MASPORT" on the bonnet!
